No Thanks to Turbo Tax (Updated)

I was planning on posting about the cruise with all of the great pictures I took, but I left the camera cable at the office, so I guess they'll have to wait for another day.

Besides I'm too busy trying to figure out how to figure out how to fix the BIG mistake I made on my taxes. I filed my taxes on time but when I was reviewing my tax forms, I realized that I accidentally mistyped my social security number into Turbo Tax. The whole reason I bought Turbo Tax was to make sure I didn't make any mistakes. I thought it was idiot proof. Think they'll give me a refund because none of their experts caught my mistake?

But that was a month ago.

I've known about the wrong social security number since I filed my taxes back in April and have been patiently awaiting my rejection letter (since I made another mistake and filed by mail instead of electronically). Well I finally got it today. And guess what, it wasn't a rejection letter, it was a bill. A bill for almost my entire economic stimulus check. Because I put in the incorrect SS#, they didn't accept my exemptions or tuition deduction.

Well at least they gave me two options at the bottom of the bill- accept the changes they made and pay the $900, or call/mail in my changes. Sounds easy, right. Of course the number they provide sends you to a voicemail that says, "Due to extremely high volume, we cannot take your call right now. Goodbye." I called back four times with two different phones and got hung up on four more times. What now?

So if anyone has any great insight into the IRS and the tax system, I would greatly appreciate it. Or any great ways to break through telephone systems to talk to an actual person, I'd love any of those ideas too. All I know is that I don't get my refund or stimulus check until I get my tiny little mistake changed. Who knew mixing up one number could cause such a hassle.

On another note, when we do get our stimulus check, we're going to do like the government wants and spend it. I'm going on a summer shopping spree. What are your favorite clothing stores? Where would you spend the money?

**Update**

I just got off the phone with the IRS. I called at 8:00 AM this morning and after being on hold for 38 minutes, I finally got to talk to a live person. I explained the problem to him, and he had almost fixed everything and put me on hold for a final few minutes to figure out the adjustment (i.e. make sure I really don't owe $800), and of course my office had a fire drill. Perfect timing huh. So I had to hang up the phone can call back. I finally just got off the phone with a woman that assured me that I will be getting my $50 refund instead of having to pay $800, and my stimulus check will be mailed sometime in June. After two hours and fifteen minutes on the phone, SUCCESS.

If you messed up your social security number, then you should be able to file an amended return. I mean, it was an honest mistake.

But that just gets me started on my huge rant against our government in general. The big corportations get to set up tax shelters so they don't have to pay taxes on their millions and billions of dollars, so it is the regular people that get slammed with taxes.

That sucks!

Mine is going right into my bank account to help pay for my flight and hotel to my best friends wedding in Dallas!

Welcome home! My Daddy is a CPA, so we just take all of our stuff over to him and he does it all - I'll be happy to ask him if there is something easier to do than call that #, but as far as tax things go - I am clueless... I do hope you get it cleared up soon!

I meant to email you about the recipes from South Beach, but when i got them ready I saw you were no longer on the diet. I think men do better with that type of diet unfortunately (my personal opinion)... a lot of pilots were on it and many flight attendants I flew with, but it seemed to make the ladies really tired... I know restricting carbs works, but is tough!

You'd think if they're going to make us file taxes they could at least work up a more efficient system. Ya know?

UGH! What a pain in the ass. My friend (who works for the GOVERNMENT) got a letter from the IRS this year that said she owed $25,000 in back taxes. Um, no.

I hope you get a hold of someone soon.

That sounds terrible - hopefully they clear this up in a "timely" manner for you.

My husband informed me that I stimulate the economy enough as is, so our check is going into savings. Boo!

Ugh sorry for all the troubles. Taxes suck. Period.

For me, though, tax season is just one more reason I count my lucky stars that I have awesome in-laws... my MIL has worked for H&R Block for 30 years - we've never had a mistake on our taxes!

Me and Angela (previous poster) are sis-in-laws so we both take taxes to Dad who is a CPA. She said it though--either of us would be happy to talk to him for you. Let me or her know if you have any other problems.

I'm not sure why you think TurboTax should have caught your SSN typo. TurboTax does NOT have access to the Social Security Administration to validate social security numbers. While we do have SSN validation routines to catch many typos, it is only a very high level validation tool to catch obvious mistakes.

As others have stated, filing an amended return can resolve this one quickly.

Glad you got it worked out. I do have special insight into the IRS since I'm a volunteer tax preparer. They give us a special phone number and everything. I've never even had to wait longer than a ring or two before talking to a real live person. It definitely makes me feel important.
