Hawaiian Chicken

A couple of weeks ago I posted about how great crock pots were and how easy they are to use. So Wednesday night I went and bought two slow cooker cookbooks on clearance at Borders to give myself some new ideas. This post is about how great crock pots are when you follow the directions.

I decided in honor of our tropical vacation coming up, I wanted to make Hawaiian chicken for dinner last night. The recipe sounded simple enough- chicken, pineapples, with a simple tropical marinade. Pour it all in the crock pot and cook on low for five hours.

Nine hours later (I'm at work everyday from 8-5), this is what our dinner looked like.

That really is chicken in there, I promise.

I guess five hours really means five hours and not eight or nine. What a waste of such delicious pineapple.

That's exactly why I don't use a crock pot. (Except I'm gone 11 hours)

It was the thought that counts, right?

Does yours have a low and high setting? Ours has both and I just use the low setting on days when I'll be gone for a long time.

Now THAT is funny...and I can laugh because I've had funny mishaps before in the kitchen. But don't give up on the crock-pot....just find recipes that call for cooking longer.

That looks horrible. I didn't even know it was possible to burn anything in a crock pot. I would've done the same thing you did and figured the extra time wouldn't have mattered. Wow! You learn something new everyday.

Some of my most memorable life experiences are of mistakes I've made. I bet you'll never forget this one - especially since you took the time to take photos of it! :)

Better luck next time!

Oh, I hate it when that happens! Did you cook it for nine hours on high? If it has a low setting try that next time- I guarentee it won't scorch like that! Don't give up on the crock pot though- it will become your best friend one day!

Or you could just add more sauce/water to let it simmer longer.. or maybe set a timer on it?

Such a waste..

oh no!! thats too bad. that sounds like such a good recipe too. I love my crockpot. but i'm home most days all day so i can see things lik that happening. My sugguestion would be to up the liquid in it. I'd probably not add the cornstarch until the end and let it boil in there for the last 1/2 hour. I'd up the liquid and add more pineapple juice or some water even to give it alot of liquid. ANd the cornstarch helps make the sauce thick so if you dont add it at first it will help. I love my crockpot and have so many crock pot recipes. Roast is the best in the crock pot!! mmm
