Works for Me Wednesday #15: Clothing Swap

We've all heard the saying "One man's junk is another man's treasure." Well I put that saying to good use last night. I plan girls' nights every Tuesday night, and this week we decided to do a clothing swap. Everyone went through their closets and brought bags, boxes, or pillowcases (Spiderman even) full of clothes (and toys & books) they wanted to get rid of.

We ended up with five different tables full of clothes plus a couple of pairs of shoes and a box full of books. We laid everything out by size (kind of like at a garage sale) and then people began rummaging through, trying things on, and piling up the things they liked to take home. All the things that nobody liked got bagged and are now sitting in my trunk waiting to be dropped off at Salvation Army later this week. I think that almost everyone (sorry Brooke) went home with something new and got rid of things they didn't want cluttering up their houses anymore.

That's all the great stuff I came home with (plus a box of books for the nursery, a bag of boy clothes for my SiL, and a couple of shirts for Richie). And the best part was that it was all free. So next time you're planning on just donating clothes (not that donating is bad), maybe check with your friends to see if they have stuff they're looking to get rid of too and swap. All of the leftovers go to charity, but most likely you'll find some buried treasure hidden in your friend's pile of junk. Having a clothing swap made me clean out my closet, saved me money, and definitely worked for me!! To check out more great tips, check out Shannon's blog!

What a fantastic idea! I would like to post this tip on my 3 R Thursday tomorrow - where I give ideas on Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. Such a fun way to do something positive! Thank you.

When I lived in FL I belonged to a moms' group that did this every six months. It was AWESOME. I rarely had to buy any clothing for the kids, and it was so fun going to playgroups and recognizing my son's pre-loved outfits on another boy. I really hope I can find some more moms to do that with now that I've moved.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, hope to see you back!

I participated in something like this a few years ago and it was a ton of fun. Thanks for reminding me of a great idea.

I think this is one of the best ideas I've heard. I have girl's night with a few of my friends and I think this is a GREAT idea. We are always trying to think of things to do, and we could all benefit from this. Thank you so much!

This was a lot of fun. Thank you so much for putting together all of our girls' nights for us. They are always fun no matter what we're doing. Feel free to use my house for anything you want to do.
