Works For Me Wednesday #14: No More Forgetting Things

Scenario 1:
Britni: Oh crap!
Richie: What??
Britni: I forgot to take my allergy pill. I'm gonna be miserable!
Scenario 2:
Richie (or most likely Britni): My head hurts. Do you have any ibuprofen?
Britni: No, I left it at the house.
Scenario 3:
Britni: Okay, I'm ready to go. (We get in the car and are driving away...)
Richie: Are you sure you've got everything?
Britni: Yeah. (An hour passes). Achoo! Can you get me an allergy pill from my purse?
Richie: They're not in here.
Britni: Oh yeah, I forgot I switched purses this morning. I'm gonna be miserable.

Do any of these scenarios sound familiar to you? I wasn't just making them up. This is my daily life. I somehow can never remember to take all of the necessary (allergy pills, ibuprofen, checkbook, tampons, etc.) things with me or I put them in another purse and decide at the last minute that purse didn't match my outfit. Well I finally came up with a great solution, at least for the medicine stuff. This is what works for me.

I went to Target last weekend to get my birth control pills filled and asked the pharmacist in my polite voice, "Do you by chance sell empty prescription bottles?" He looked at me with a very strange face. I explained, "I always buy the big bottles of pills and forget to take them with me. I was wondering if I could buy a couple of the prescription bottles to put in my different purses." He said, "Well I could give you a couple." So here's what I ended up with.

Step 1: Take large bottles of whatever type pills you take.

Step 2: Get empty prescription bottles from your pharmacist.

Step 3: Never be miserable again!!

Now I have allergy pills and headache meds with me in every purse I take and I don't have to lug around the huge Costco bottles either! This definitely worked for me! For more great tips, check out Shannon's blog at Rocks in My Dryer!

I would take it one step further and suggest you put with a sharpie the expiration dates of the pills you put in those containers. Especially for tylenol which is dangerous to take past it's expiration date...

Good idea! I have another. I used to always forget to take my lunch to work. My remedy was to get a lunch box that has a strap for a handle and hang it on the front door nob so I can't leave the house without taking it off. :)

Great idea! I always forget to have allergy medicine or Tylenol with me. Especially if I wake up feeling fine, by afternoon I am miserable.

Good ideas! I too have problems with not having these things after I change purses!

Good idea! I also use a pill container and fill it up with ibuprofen or whatever I need. I like the idea of putting expiration dates on there. Hadn't thought about that!

What a great idea! I carry bottles with me, but when I don't use them, I get frustrated and take them out of my purse because they take up too much room. Of course, the next day, I need something. Combining it all in one small bottle and then having one for each bag you carry would help. You might also leave one in the car.

Very good tip. I bought one of those little purse tubes of Advil and have kept that tube filled with Advil and Dramamine ever since.

One word of caution, in many places it is illegal to carry pills around that are not in the original containers. With all the illegal drugs out there they are really cracking down on it in many places. Check with your police just in case you should happen to get stopped.

I have a habit of putting my pills for the day in an old RX bottle, yes it has my name, yes it has a RX number, but it usually does not have any of the pills that came in it. There is a mixture. I found that was illegal in many places too.

For my 40th a friend got me an adorable pill box for my purse. She got it as a joke, but it has come in very handy.

OK.. I have the same problem... but with my keys, phone, and wallet.. Marques always runs through "the big three" with me in the morning, just to be safe!

This is a good idea! I've often remembered to give my son his morning pill on the way to school...which is too late since the pills reside on the kitchen window sill. I should get an extra bottle and keep a few pills in my purse for THOSE kinds of mornings! Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

That is great. I didn't realize they would do that. An added benefit, those bottles are child-proof, so even if my kids got into my purse, they can't get into the bottle.
Thanks!

Sort of reminds me of the old "keep a vacuum on every floor of your house so it's convenient in time of mess" strategy.

I don't think you'd have a problem with this system unless you were flying somewhere and had to take your purse through airline security. Although, I have taken just enough dietary supplements (in pill form) in a ziplock bag in my suitcase, and nobody seemed to care.

On a fun note to this, I got the large bottles that liquid cough syrups are put in. We put our alcohol in them when we went on a cruise. They don't leak, won't break, and they did't look suspicious.

Very good idea! I however forget my purse. I've been known to leave the diaper bag behind too - not a good idea.

I put my pills in one of those little compartmentalized pill boxes so I wouldn't have to lug around the bottles. I've lost that little box at least 10 times! Thank God they aren't heart pills. I was going to buy more of them, but I think your idea of bottles is better--I'll just put a day's worth in each bottle, and stick one at work, one in the car and one in my purse, with the originals at home. If I ever go on a cruise, I'm doing like Lisa did!
